Development That Doesn’t Cost The Earth:
Siân Edwards, Director of the Andrews Charitable Trust (ACT), explains why we are supporting Excellent Development a small British charity that has big aspirations for helping comunities in Kenya…
“Excellent Development was set up to support people living in rural parts of Kenya – some of the most isolated and unforgiving landscapes in the world. Working closely with a network of self-help community groups, it strives to improve the livelihoods, health and incomes of one of Africa’s poorest populations.
Excellent Development helps those facing a multitude of problems in their day-to-day lives stemming from deforestation and ongoing shortages of water. The projects enable them to take greater control of their environment through improved soil and water conservation which, in turn, increases the production of food and improves general health. With the time previously spent collecting water now freed up for example, adults are now able to work profitably whilst their children attend school, all of which dramatically improves the long-term prospects of entire families and communities as a whole.
Joining forces with the Four Acre Trust, ACT is funding Excellent Development’s ambitious five year plan, contributing more than £500,000 to strengthening both the work with communities in Kenya and the ability of the UK staff to grow alternative income streams, management processes and partnerships.
As part of this investment, Richard Thomas will join Excellent Development’s Board of Trustees, lending Andrews business advice and overall support to their Director and trustees.
This investment is intended to put Excellent Development in a position where it is able to extend its work – reaching tens of thousands more people, not only in Kenya but in other African countries too. Something that could not of been made possible without Andrews support.”
